Armstrong Family Scholarship

UPDATED 2024/2025

The Armstrong Family Scholarship is intended to support highly motivated students who value intellectual challenges and have a passion for learning and the exploration of ideas. Students may demonstrate these qualities through their scholarship application itself; or by participation in student support programs, such as EOPS and Special Programs, or academic support programs. The fund is named in honor and memory of John Wilhelm Armstrong and is established by his wife, Elizabeth Armstrong, and children, Allan and Sarah. Born in Brooklyn, NY, John spent his childhood in Norway during WW II and from his earliest days loved learning. Inspired and encouraged by teachers and friends, John returned to the US to complete his BSEE degree at the University of Wisconsin. He became a radar engineer working in various capacities in the US, Italy, Greenland and England. Later he became a scientific and technical translator, combining his knowledge of several languages with his engineering and science expertise. John had a passion for learning and believed in the value of education. Having experienced childhood in an occupied country with scarce food and resources, John was acutely aware that education is the one thing that cannot be taken away. This scholarship is to honor John’s lifelong love of learning.
